Mercedes Schlapp, the White House communication strategist, has a tough job. Mercedes Schlapp faces a challenging task as White House's strategic communications adviser. She's dealing with an administration that includes the president as the president's own communications director. Yet, through all of it Schlapp is focussed on the task in hand and has worked closely with the White House's political and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as with the larger communications team for policy-related rollouts. She's focused on areas including school safety opioids, infrastructure, as well as trade. Schlapp isn't involved with journalists much in her current role. But she drew a burst of attention in March when her name was floated as a potential replacement Hope Hicks as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp's job to serve as White House Strategic Communications Advisor is not an easy one. She's faced with a president who serves as his own communication director, multiple legal battles that could sabotage the administration's messaging strategy as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own controversies. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focused on the mission that she has been assigned, and is working closely with White House's policy as well as legislative affairs and policy shops, as well with the larger communications team for policy-related rollouts. Her main area of agenda has focused on issues like security at schools, trade, and opioids. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters often in her current position. In March, she gained a sudden burst interest, after it was widely known that Schlapp was an option to take over Hope Hicks's position as director of communication. This fight was ugly. The ally of Schlapp's, Tony Sayegh, and an opponent who is also named Tony have been fighting on the news. Schlapp stated that, after she learned that the Washington Examiner had published an article with negative comments about Sayegh's persona, she phoned Sayegh for a private conversation.
